AC VS DC CHARGE

DC FAST CHARGING

The AC/DC conversion takes place off board the vehicle and
the charging station supplies DC power directly to the vehicle battery.

PUBLIC CHARGING

Charge using a level 2 (AC) public charging station

  • Public charging stations can be located using the myCadillac app.
  • Some public charging stations may require to scan or use a designated charging app or card which may incur a fee.
  • Different countries have varying charging operators – with each one possibly requiring their own designated app or card to be used.
  • There are two types of public AC chargers.
  • With integrated charging cable – with these type of chargers you can just scan your charging card (if paid) and plug in the integrated type 2 cable into your vehicle.
  • Without a charging cable – with these types of chargers you would need to scan your charging card (if paid) and then plug in your own detachable type 2 to type 2 charging cable. Please contact your local dealer for details on how to purchase your own type 2 to type 2 charging cable.

DC Fast Charging (DCFC) Public Stations

  • Public charging stations can be located using
    the myCadillac app.
  • They are usually located in malls, petrol stations and highways
  • DCFC ranges from 50kW all the way up to 350kW – with most petrol stations in GCC currently having 50kW DCFCs.
  • All DC fast charging stations have integrated charging cables due to the very high voltage and current flowing through them.

You may be required to pay to use some of these public DC fast charging stations (varies from different charging operators in different countries).

DC FAST CHARGING

KNOW YOUR EV’s CHARGING CAPABILITY

All EVs can be charged at level 1 with a household
electrical socket. However, this will only provide trickle charge which is much
slower than level 2 (AC charging) and level 3 (DC fast charging). *

 

Identify what is the maximum power at which your desired EV
can charge for level 2 (AC Charging). This will allow you to consider the
appropriate home charging options.

  • This could be single phase (up to 7 kW)
  • Three phase (up to 11 kW)
  • Three phase (up to 22 kW)

Identify if your desired EV can be charged at level 3 (DC fast charging)
and at which maximum power rating. This will allow to you consider the
appropriate public chargers that you can use.

POWER YOUR EV FROM HOME

If you reside in a villa or townhouse, most likely you would be able to install a level 2 charger in your garage.

 

The compound engineer or a certified installer would be able to check the electrical distribution board of your house to determine the available power for the EV charger to safely consume.

 

Based on the availability of power you would be able to decide whether a single phase or three phase AC charger can be safely installed along with its specific electrical power capacity.

 

If you reside in an apartment, you may want to check the following:

  • Does the apartment building/tower already have chargers installed?
  • Are there any public chargers for your regular usage?

If none of the above two points apply, then you may want to inquire with the building/tower management to see if you can install a charger for your use.

 

Additionally, you could also discuss with the building/tower management to install a few chargers for shared usage amongst the residents

ON COMMON EV MYTHS

MYTH 1

EVS ARE COSTLY TO PURCHASE, MAINTAIN, AND CHARGE.

In general, switching to an EV becomes more cost-efficient over time. EVs are different than internal combustion vehicles and tend to require less maintenance, as there are fewer moving parts that need to be regularly inspected or changed, such as belts, engine oil, and filters.

MYTH 2

EVS ARE SMALL CARS ONLY.

EVs can come in many sizes. Many of our new EVs will be SUVs such as LYRIQ and the ESCALADE IQ.

MYTH 3

EVS HAVE MINIMAL RANGE.

A 2022 New Car Buyer Study (NCBS) was conducted by IRC with a sample of 4,991 drivers in UAE and 6,054 drivers in KSA. The research shows that the average daily commute in the U.A.E. is 50-59 km by about 17.1% of the sample size (highest percentage of sample) and 13.7% driving 100-109km daily on average (second highest percentage of sample).

 

For KSA the research shows that about 16.4% of the sample size (highest percentage of sample) have an average daily commute of 30-39 km and about 13.1% have an average daily commute of 40-49 km (second highest percentage of sample). Fortunately, GM EVs have an overall range well above these average daily commutes.

MYTH 4

EVS TAKE TOO LONG TO CHARGE.

While EVs do take longer to fuel than Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) powered vehicles, with home charging, this can be as seamless as EV owners enjoy waking to a “full tank” and eliminating the hassle of gas station visits. Many petrol stations are installing DC Fast Charging that enables EV owners to top-up their charge.

MYTH 5

PUBLIC CHARGING IS HARD TO FIND.

We are in the beginning stages of EV adoption. In the next few years, more and more public chargers will be added across the region. In reality, most EV charging might take place at home. However, it is good to have more public chargers but may not be critical.

MYTH 6

EV BATTERIES DETERIORATE SIGNIFICANTLY OVER TIME

Lithium-Ion batteries are designed with protective measures to ensure longevity of battery life. Most electric vehicles will enjoy a long useful battery life.

MYTH 7

EVS ARE UNSAFE.

EVs tested for crashworthiness by NHTSA have performed well. In addition, energy.gov states that EVs are as safe as conventional vehicles. EVs must undergo rigorous safety testing and meet the same safety standards required for U.S. ICE vehicles. EVs must also meet specific standards for limiting spillage from batteries, securing batteries during a crash, and isolating the chassis from the high-voltage system.

MYTH 8

IT’S NOT SAFE TO CHARGE AN EV IN THE RAIN.

Charging stations must be weatherproof designed to protect both the car and its occupants from electrical shock. Electric vehicle chargers are tested by OSHA-certified laboratories and must meet stringent safety standards set by NEMA, the Society of automotive Engineers, and Underwriter Labs (UL). Experts assert that it is safe to charge in the rain when using properly-installed equipment and following manufacturer recommended charging guidelines.
